Happy Songs!!
Hello abandoned blog and neglected blog friends! Here's a happy song for Friday, this one is dedicated to my brother Charlie. While it may not be a traditionally happy song, it reminds me of happy times singing at the top of my lungs with my big bro, whose wedding in Connecticut I'm off to right now. XOXOBAMA!

Is this furreal??
I don't know what to believe on the yubetubes these days, but something is just fishy about this. It's amazing. But, like, is that a tranny?? Is that what's throwing me off? It's also hard to know when falling in love with 'tubers if I'm like totally behind and this all "went around" three months ago. Just saying, if this is real, it's fucking pretty incredible.

The Wedding: The Music Video
My cousin married a neat lady in Macon, Georgia last weekend, and I'm not gonna lie, it was a magical affair*
From the bride:
"We’ve promised to wean off the email 'blast', but there are simply things we feel we must share with you. In time, however, 'the waldenfeld' email group will no longer be in use, and you will miss it, those simpler times. In any case, as you make a point to ply our flikr account with photos, we thought you may enjoy this video. Micah sent it us yesterday, and we’ve had it on loop. It captures the vitality and love of that weekend we shared perfectly. At least for three minutes we can relive what will undoubtedly be the one of the most fun and important occasions of our lives."
*Warning: white people be dancing all up in this.

Tats crazy!
I go back and forth about tats. Mostly forth. Diana cracked me up with this one . But this one has forehead acne, so it's an EW for me.
THE BACKSTORY:
"My wife likes to tattoo portraits, and I wanted her to do portraits on me, but couldn't think of anyone's face I wanted on my body for the rest of my life. Then one day she comes home and complains, 'Eliaz [her co-worker] won't let me tattoo Bill Murray on him.' I replied, 'Hell, you can tattoo him on me.' Two days later, I had this. I figured I may as well dedicate that arm to other comedians I like, as well. A few months later, I came into her shop looking to get a Phil Hartman tattoo. We couldn't find any decent pictures, and she said it would be funny if I got a David Cross tattoo but only if it was as Tobias. And that's how that happened." --Schwa Love

News to me...
Dum dums remind me of the pediatrician's office.
Fav flav breakdown = cherry, butterscotch, cream soda/root beer, and later, blue raspberry.
Flavs that make me go EW = pineapple, watermelon, sour apple.
And "mystery" is all the flavs smooshed together, right?
[via: Thaneeya McArdle ]
WRONG!
"Dum Dums are made in about twelve different flavors; nine or ten of these flavors are classic flavors; two or three are cycled in and out. The "Mystery Flavor," present in every bag of Dum Dums, is a combination of two flavors in the bag. The combined flavors are random. This combination occurs because the production of Dum Dums is continuous--there is no stop between flavors. This practice results in the flavor combination."

Owner of a lonley heart, and other tchotchkes
"Unlike the destructive self-help instructions for recovery from failed loves, the Museum offers every individual the chance to overcome the emotional collapse through creation, i.e., by contributing to the holdings of the Museum. The individual gets rid of controversial objects , triggers of momentarily undesirable emotions, by turning them into museum exhibits, i.e., artefacts and thereby participating in the creation of a preserved collective emotional history."

There’s a pool in the backyard of the rental house my family occupied for a year in 1984. This song reminds me of that pool.
It’s one of my happy songs.

Self Esteem Room
Grab your insecurity blanket and relax, loser. High self esteem is totes overrated.
"Increasingly, psychologists are looking at such behavior and saying out loud what may go against the grain of how many people act: high self-esteem is not the same thing as healthy self-esteem. And new research by a psychology professor from the University of Georgia is adding another twist: those with “secure” high self-esteem are less likely to be verbally defensive than those who have “fragile” high self-esteem..."
"One of the ways in which high self-esteem can turn bad is when it is accompanied by verbal defensiveness—lashing out at others when a person’s opinions, beliefs, statements or values are threatened. So Kernis and his colleagues designed a study, reported in the current article, to see if respondents whose self-esteem is “fragile” were more verbally defensive than those whose self-esteem was 'secure'.”

Googlegängers
PH's post today reminded me of this recent NYT article about the phenomenon of 'google twins' and self-similarity.
"...human beings are unconsciously drawn to people and things that remind us of ourselves...It’s what we call implicit egotism,”...“We’ve shown time and time again that people are attracted to people, places and things that resemble their names, without a doubt...Social psychologists have found that people are more attracted to others with similar faces or identical birth dates.... people’s fascination with their Googlegängers might be an adult expression of the common childhood wish to be an identical twin."

Today's Special: Nostalgia
Some of the first memories I have of life are the tv shows "Pinwheel" and "Today's Special" that ran on Nickelodeon in the 1980's, approximately, in the morning.
An observation: my nostalgia cravings increase along with my work load and anxiety. Digging through the internet attic for magical mittens and
orphaned mullato half-animals soothes me. Maybe these past blasts remind me of a simpler time.
Or maybe they remind me I exist, period.
I'm in my twenties, I dunno!!
While I'm figuring stuff out, please enjoy the delightful, pinwheely breeze coming off this precious cupcake waltz .

The eyes are the windows of your face
It's official. I'm nerding out on this video. What else do you call watching it every day?
I think it's one of my favorite SNL skits of all time. Which begs the question, what are my favorite SNL skits of all time?
Off the top of my head...
Land Shark ("Candy Gram...")
Chopping Broccoli (told you I was nerdin' out)
Happy Fun Ball
Star Wars
The Prince Show (w/Steve Martin)
The Synchronized Swimmers
Dick in a Box (the color me badd-ittude kills me)
So there you have it. I'm a Saturday Night Live fan and I've been one for a long time. Ever since the 20th anniversary special aired in the 90's. I went out and rented every "Best of..." tape I could find at "Video Village" and "Erols*" (Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, Dan Akroyd...)
People love to hate on SNL. Haters say "oh, Saturday Night Live isn't good anymore, blobbity blah." Not cool people like me who stay home on Saturday nights. Really though, just think about it, try being hilarious for thirty solid years, every week, in front of a live studio audience. Try it and see if you don't have a few extended awkward periods. It's pretty impressive they're a) still on the air and b) fresh and hilarious, albeit intermittently, after all these years.

*That for a short time was located in the back of CVS, which looking back, seems so queer. I can't possibly be the only person** who remembers that.
